These days you can walk into almost any supermarket or retail store and find countless products claiming to be environmentally friendly. Green bottles, labels sporting lush forests and crystal clear lakes, along with many other “green friendly” icons and terms, are used to make a product more appealing to eco-conscious shoppers. But what does being “green” really mean? And how do you, the consumer, know if the product you’re choosing is really good for both the environment and your family?

Under a constant deluge of new products, shoppers grow increasingly reliant on labels to determine whether or not they want to buy one brand over another. And to the newly initiated, those labels can be extremely misleading. A brand may proudly proclaim itself eco-friendly by using recyclable material to package its goods. However, when you look beyond the pretty wrappings, you find the product within that recyclable bottle contains ammonia, which is poisonous if swallowed, and irritates the respiratory system when inhaled. How can something that is so unfriendly to your own body be considered friendly to the environment? The answer is that it can’t, because it’s a chemical killer—a compound that kills organisms to attain cleanliness. These types of cleaners have their place, but not in everyday, environmentally friendly cleaning processes.

So, with all the confusion about “green cleaners,” how do you find your way to a cleaner, greener personal environment? The answer is knowledge. The concept and culture of “green” living is broad, but what it largely comes down to is health. Will this product improve my family’s overall quality of life, or will it make us sick in the long run? Is the company that creates it really interested in bettering lives, or are they just jumping on a bandwagon to turn a quick profit? Learn what ingredients are harmful to you and the environment, and research the companies that create the products you’re interested in. Making informed decisions takes time and effort, but when the payoff is a healthier world for everyone, the burden isn’t really so big.

At Generations Go Green, all of our products help to reduce risk to people and the environment by preventing pollution. These cleansers use best-in-class components from the CleanGredients© database to markedly improve their environmental and human health profiles.

www.generationsgogreen.com

Grand plans, like those of Solyndra to bring solar energy to firms nationwide, still ripple through Silicon Valley, but quietly. The current economic slump and Chinese competition have taken a toll.Instead, a new vision for the future of the green economy is emerging – at least for the short term. Instead of transforming power grids, green companies are looking at more incremental advances, whether it’s improving light-bulb efficiency or helping Wal-Mart make its supply chain more environmentally friendly.

But the real trends in clean tech are apparent in the entire “green” supply chain, where Wal-Mart is also a leader, Mr. Tamminen says.”Wal-Mart is pushing everyone in its supply chain to reduce packaging, use more efficient transport systems, replace toxic chemicals with nontoxic alternatives, and secure food from local suppliers,” he adds. “It’s ‘green’ but not the typical clean-tech, Silicon Valley high-tech products and investments you typically think of when saying ‘green.’ “Like corporations, cities can play a role in stimulating green technology. San Jose, Calif., signed a contract recently with SolarCity to build 28 solar sites, says SolarCity spokesman Jonathan Bass. The developments represent a gradual evolution of business models rather than a total paradigm shift. Though the wind and solar sectors remain strong, some experts say the focus is moving away from capital-intensive and fundamentally life-altering industries to companies that yield returns in comparatively short periods.Bridelux is a leading developer and manufacturer of LED lighting technologies in the valley and was recently named in the annual Global Cleantech 100, the top 100 innovative companies projected to make a significant market impact over the next five to 10 years.Cypress Envirosystems helps retrofit existing commercial buildings and industrial facilities for energy efficiency and lower maintenance costs. The field is crowded, with Serious Energy, SCi, Soladigm, and Enlighted providing the same services.”What we have seen, particularly in the last two years, is that VCs [venture capitalists] are saying, ‘We are also interested in looking a lot more at short-term types of investments that are not necessarily game changers but work around the edges of clean technology,’ ” says Mr. Heesen of the National Venture Capital Association.Companies in architectural designs, building material, and lighting, for instance, will have significant impacts on the amount of oil Americans use, he says. They “can make money in the shorter term, and they are not regulated as heavily.”Of course, Silicon Valley and the broader Bay Area are still thinking big. Solar Trust of Oakland, Calif., which rejected a $2.1 billion loan guarantee from the US Energy Department, has its 1,000-megawatt Blythe Project in California, which it hopes will have an output capacity comparable to large coal-fired and nuclear power plants. But the negativity surrounding Solyndra has clouded how Silicon Valley is evolving, says Sheeraz Haji, chief executive officer of Cleantech Group.”Within the US, Silicon Valley has a very prominent place in terms of innovation, financing, and the enormous presence of venture capitalists,” he says. “Silicon Valley is going to continue leading the country in the clean-tech field.”

The Federal Reserve seems to believe that even a small bank may be too big to fail. The central bank spent nearly two years scrutinizing the takeover of the tiny Bonneville Bank by the prepaid debit card firm Green Dot. The soundness of even niche banks matters. But in the too-big-to-fail era, the watchdog’s slow process is an unneeded deterrent to the sector’s small institutions. Green Dot, a $1.3 billion market-value company whose cards are sold by Wal-Mart and other retailers, bought Bonneville, which is based in Utah, partly to secure bank holding company status. The Fed’s regulatory approval should give Green Dot investors more comfort. Owning a bank will also enhance operating efficiency and innovation. Green Dot can now collect interchange and other fees directly and introduce products without waiting for the go-ahead from a third-party bank. Shareholders liked the development, and Green Dot stock went up 10 percent on the news of the Fed’s approval of the deal. The deal should also be good for Americans without traditional bank accounts. Green Dot can now afford to cut fees and still remain profitable. Yet despite Bonneville’s paltry $36 million of assets, the Fed deliberated over the transaction for 21 months. One of the bank’s five governors, Elizabeth Duke, even voted against it. She expressed concern that Green Dot’s business model wasn’t diversified enough — so, in a sense, arguing that it might be too small to survive. The safety of small lenders is a legitimate concern. But there’s a new agency to help ease some of the Fed’s burden with regards to consumer protection. What’s more, with big banks having grown bigger since leaning on taxpayers to survive the crisis, systemic concerns should be where the central bank is focused. Though the Fed ultimately approved the Bonneville sale, the delay and dissent suggest an unusually tough path for certain financial institution deals. It might unnecessarily frighten off smaller banks in a position to develop underserved markets as their larger brethren wrestle to avoid crippling the system again. Given those circumstances, it doesn’t seem the best message — or use of resources — from the regulator. www.generationsgogreen.com

The U.S. central bank spent nearly two years scrutinizing the tiny takeover of Utah-based Bonneville Bank by prepaid debit card firm Green Dot. The soundness of even niche banks matters. But in the too-big-to-fail era, the watchdog’s slow process is an unneeded deterrent to the sector’s small fry.Green Dot, a $1.3 billion market-value company whose cards are sold by Wal-Mart and other retailers, bought the Beehive State minnow partly to secure bank holding company status. The Fed’s regulatory imprimatur should give Green Dot investors more comfort. Owning a bank will also enhance operating efficiency and innovation. Green Dot can now collect interchange and other fees directly and introduce new products without waiting for a third-party bank’s say-so.Shareholders liked the development, pushing up Green Dot shares by almost 10 percent following the Fed’s approval. The news should also be good for unbanked or under-banked Americans. Green Dot can now afford to cut fees and still remain profitable. Yet despite Bonneville’s paltry $36 million of assets, the Fed deliberated over the transaction for 21 months. One of the bank’s five governors, Elizabeth Duke, even voted against it.Duke expressed concern that Green Dot’s business model isn’t diversified enough – so, in a sense, maybe too small to survive. Along with concerns about economic shocks and competition from big banks, future regulation could endanger the company’s profits. The safety of small lenders is a legitimate concern. But there’s a new agency to help alleviate some of the Fed’s burden with regards to consumer protection. What’s more, with big banks having grown bigger since leaning on taxpayers to survive the crisis, systemic concerns should be where the central bank is focused.Though the Fed ultimately approved the Bonneville sale, the delay and dissent suggest an unusually tough path for certain financial institution deals.
The project was funded by several contributors including the city of Cleveland and Bradley County each contributing $75,000 toward the project, the USDA Rural Development who contributed $99,000, and the Appalachian Regional Commission who invested $150,000 from their state and federal budgets.
“We are very excited about the ribbon cutting on Friday,” said Hurley Buff, Incubator executive director. “This has been nine years in the making. This is definitely a red letter day in the history of the incubator.”
The incubator will also be the home for Cleveland State’s Alternative Fuels Learning Laboratory. Grant funding was used to purchase the necessary equipment to convert food waste products to biodiesel blends of B20.
To support the Alternative Fuels Learning Laboratory, CSCC has developed the companion curriculum. The intent of the course is to train students on the science, technology, and manufacturing processes to convert waste cooking oil into biodiesel. In turn, these trained students can support the emerging alternative fuels industry.
According to Mr. Gentry, this class is available on demand. Once established with biodiesel, CSCC will evaluate offering courses in other alternative fuels, such as ethanol or electric vehicles.
In addition to the Alternative Fuels Learning Laboratory, there are two other committed tenants—Air Tight Spray Foam Insulation and Tennessee Automation Services.
Mr. Buff said, “We really hope to house businesses who have “reinvented” themselves to leave a drastically reduced impact on the environment. Basically, in some way or another, these businesses are all going to help the environment and our dependence on foreign energy resources.”
Mayors Rowland and Davis will both speak at the ribbon cutting on Friday. A representative from Congressman Fleischmann’s office will be present, as well as Gary Farlow with the Chamber of Commerce, David Collett from USDA Rural Development, and Phil McMullan representing the Appalachian Regional Commission.
For more information on the ribbon cutting or on becoming a tenant of the Cleveland/Bradley Energy Center, contact Hurley Buff at 478-6476 or email him at info@cbbi.net.

Dec. 13 (Bloomberg) — Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc., the maker of the Keurig single-serve coffee brewer, lost share in the coffee market last month as new single-serve companies entered the field. The share of coffee dollar sales held by Green Mountain’s single-serve products for the four weeks ended Nov. 27 declined to 8.4 percent, down 0.4 percentage points from the previous four-week period, according to a Bloomberg Industries analysis of data from researcher SymphonyIRI Group. The company’s share rose 3.4 percentage points from the year-earlier period. In September, Green Mountain will lose the main patents on K-Cups, allowing competitors to make their own versions. Rivals already have emerged, including one-cup pods made by Rogers Family Co. that are compatible with Green Mountain’s Keurig machines. The company is also battling criticism from hedge fund manager David Einhorn that its market-share gains have peaked.Green Mountain has sought to boost sales and discourage competition by partnering with brands such as Caribou Coffee Co. and Folgers. Earlier this year, the company signed deals with Seattle-based Starbucks Corp. and Dunkin’ Brands Group Inc.Greg McKinley, an analyst at Dougherty & Co., downgraded Green Mountain today, citing data from researcher NPD Group Inc. that showed a widening spread between the growth of Green Mountain’s brewer shipments and U.S. consumer purchases of coffee machines.McKinley, who is based in Minneapolis, downgraded the shares to “neutral” after having a “buy” rating on the stock since July 2010.Green Mountain fell 12 percent to $49.95 at the close in New York. The Waterbury, Vermont-based company’s shares have gained 52 percent this year.

You can see it from the front window of the Desert Center Café — an ever-expanding patch of brown spreading out over the desert as men and machines clear the land for the first block of the Desert Sunlight solar project.Located on public land about 50 miles east of Indio, the 550-megawatt photovoltic plant is in the first stages of construction schedule, with the first power expected to hit the grid by late 2013.More than 175 workers are now at the site — from biological monitors who walk as far as 17 miles a day to ensure the project is environmentally responsible, to previously unemployed construction workers who were retrained at College of the Desert to work on large-scale solar plants.“It laid the groundwork for what we’re doing now,” said Morongo Valley resident Peter Mayo, 46, a COD graduate who’s been on the job at Desert Sunlight for three months.“The theory is very important. You can come out here, and we’re putting posts in the ground, or you can understand you’re part of the largest thin-film solar project in the world. That gives you a different outlook on what you’re doing,” said Mayo, who lost his house during the recession.“I believe in renewable energy; I think it’s the way the future’s going. We can’t sustain the way we’ve been.”First Solar, the Arizona company building the project, manufactures thin-film solar panels, a technology that is better suited to high temperatures and less-than-perfect sunlight. Most projects using such panels are smaller than 100 megawatts. As one of the first large-scale solar projects being built east of the Coachella Valley, Desert Sunlight has also become a symbol of the region’s future as a potential center for renewable energy development — and the jobs and economic growth that come with it.By the time of its completion in 2015, the project may have employed hundreds of desert residents and poured an estimated $336 million into the region’s economy. It also will pump enough electricity into the grid — via Southern California Edison’s Devers-Palo Verde transmission line — to power 160,000 homes in California annually for the next 20 to 25 years.

Generations Go Green is offering free shipping on a case of cleaner.
The case can be mixed with any of the products. They offer five really great houshold cleaning products. These products are truely green and they didn’t sacrifice any of the cleaning power. The products are Kitchen degreaser , Bathroom Cleaner, Carpet cleaner, All-Purpose cleaner, and Glass Cleaner. The Carpet Cleaner is amazing. I use it all the time on my clothes because I’m so sloppy with food. It takes the spots right out. Many Regards Bill Noon
